Vegetables for Constipation

Vegetables are essential for easing constipation. They are rich in fibers, which don’t get absorbed and provide bulk and motility to your bowels. When constipated, eat lot of raw vegetables to facilitate intestinal movements, and once your bowels are regular, do not stop this habit, but consume sufficiently enough for maintaining the same.

Among the various vegetables, carrot juice with that of spinach, when consumed daily can relieve constipation. Cucumber, when added to the same combination can enhance the effects. They not only cause secretion of water into the large intestines due to potassium but also enhance urine production, which dissolves stones present in the urinary tract.

Cabbage is another vegetable, which combats constipation effectively. It is rich in various nutrients, like foliate, beta-carotene, which enhances vision, and potassium. Re-entry of water causes stretching of the walls and stimulates it thereby leading to bowel reflexes. Asparagus can also be consumed for constipation since it acts on the bowels too. Keep them refrigerated but not more than 3 days as they can lose their nutrient values. Those with gout should avoid this.

For regular bowel movements, here’s one recipe, which can be had for lunch. Chop carrots and add them with lettuce, cauliflower, cucumbers, few raisins, flax seeds that have been grounded and cabbage after shredding. This can be mixed with olive oil, flax seed oil or even apple cider vinegar for excellent taste.

Citrus For Constipation

Although there are many commercial preparations available in the market these days, it is always advisable to try out home remedies before resorting to these. In the same regards, citrus is one effective way to treat and prevent constipation. Here’s how:

Lemon juice acts as a stimulant not only for the colon but also for the liver, which produces detoxifying enzymes thereby maintaining the gastrointestinal tract as well as other systems. A healthy body thereby keeps constipation at bay as well.

Although, those suffering from arthritis, epilepsy or on contraceptives or any other drugs, it is advised to avoid intake of the following remedies as these may reduce the clearance time of drugs causing toxicity.

For constipation, extract a lemon and add to warm water. Drink this in the morning, and stay empty stomach for atleast half an hour.

Grapefruits are another fruits, which can be squeezed to extract the juice. Drinking this before anything else in the morning for few days enhances the bowel movements. An important thing to be kept in mind is to avoid any intake of foodstuff for the next half an hour. Grapefruit juice can also be combined with orange juice to obtain a tangy taste.

Citrus juices not only provide relief from constipation but also strengthen the immune system of the body, thus preventing infections, which one is exposed to daily.

Fight Constipation with Juices

Constipation is a condition, which very few of us may not have suffered from. Everyone at some point of time has experienced it. Few may have it on a long-term basis. For those, it is advised to consume juices between meals and in the mornings.

Mulberry can be consumed as a juice, which provides excellent effects against gut diseases. It is mainly used in old people to relieve constipation. When half cup of blackberries is mixed with half cup of water, what you get is nothing short of an effective notion for constipation. For best results, have it first thing in the morning. Other cherries like Elderberry, Boysenberry etc can also be consumed in their juice forms. Rich in nutrients, they facilitate the peristaltic wave-like motion, thereby enhancing bowel movements.

If you cannot savor these juices, try some of the following preparations, which can be made in the house itself.

With a cup of apple juice, add figs and raisins in a mixer and prepare till they are of a slight thick consistency only. Consume for few days and your bowel movements will be back to regular.

Blend atleast 3 figs with a banana, honey in one tablespoon and a cup of rice dream. Have the juice in the morning and during the day in between meals.

For those with less time, just take half glass of fig juice and half glass prune juice. Mix them and drink in the morning before anything else. Rest assured, your bowel activity will return to normal.
